Been racing my stock car this weekend, as my lad races a banger. It's a great father son time.
I have to admit I did never get the point of oval racing. I've always raced circuits and dismissed the skill needed.
However when you actually do it you realise that there is loads of demands on the driver. The intensity of the high speed enclosed oval like a mighty arena, with solid wood walls ready to deal car damaging penalties for going to wide, to having to use lightning reflexes to swerve your car out of the way of a pile up. It's a great laugh!
It's not cheap. The rules are ancient so it's cell batteries and brushed motors. Motors last a few weeks if you want to keep up to speed (they are not rebuildable) and cell batteries are a pain compared to lipos. Also you need to be the sort that has a nice selection of tyres to tune the handling. So its quite an expensive class to be at the front.
It definitely has improved my peripheral driving awareness so my on and off road driving is better, and most importantly it's great fun!
I just hope it moves with the times, or this racing will soon be gone like the gladiators of old.
