Lighter and more reliable |
Tamiya have just launched a new lightweight diff cup to replace those used on the spools for the TRF417v5, TA06 and will be std on the new TRF418.
Lighter, but still retains the strength |
As can be seen its a direct fit but they have made some cut-outs on the cup to save 2 grams of weight . This will reduce the rotational mass a little bit more for even quicker acceleration and responsiveness.
Fitting the cups
The cups are a simple straight swap, and the one other big change is that the slots are now opened up to use drive shaft protectors. Two pairs of the shaft protectors are included so you will be able to fit them straight on to your current drive shafts.
Ready to fit in the car |
Track Test
I was racing at a large carpet circuit and I needed to replace my front gear diff with a spool as the track was open and I was loosing out by not getting the power to the wheels quick enough coming out of corners. The part was a quick fit, I kept the belt tension the same as the gear diff (Two units from neutral towards tight).
The car went very well I was able to dial out some more rotation by adding more rear toe to 2.5 degrees.
The one thing I was keen on checking was the reliabilty of the shaft protectors, I have done 5 race meetings and they are still in great condition (I do only run 17.5 boosted / blinky though). Although when I used to use the plastic drive cups in the older TRF spool I would already have some deep grooves and movement in them. So this is an improvement.
