Here is the race report and TRF419 set-up from David Joos whose son Florian is a rising star and racing the TRF419.

Last weekend we raced at the ETS in Wels Austria, the track was a very high grip track and the cars were racing clockwise around the circuit.

Florian was really struggling with the high grip carpet, this hampered his practice session and the first few qualifiers weren't very good as I chased the best set-up. In the end he only had one good qualifier and on his last run his wheel came of (but his car was looking great before). Obviously he wanted to fire his mechanic!!! :)

Setting the car up:

Confronted with the high grip conditions, I didn't want to go the easy way and put glue of his front wheel, it might have been a quick fix but it will not ultimately give you the best results, so worked on developing a different set-up instead.

The main things I did were:
  • Shift the battery more inward (by 1mm).
  • Raise the camber links on the inner bloks (they are at 2mm).
  • Harder rear anti roll bar (1.3).
  • Raised the KHZ on the Muchmore ESC from 8khz to 32KHZ to get a softer feel on acceleration (This softens the throttle, so it can calm the traction roll down more as, hard throttle and steering can easily induce the car to topple over).
  • Remove 1mm shim on the front steering knuckle (was 2mm)
  • Always use new spool outdrives as these can induce grip rolls.
  • Switched from a LTCR LW to a Mazdaspeed 6 LW

Here is the set-up

I was really happy with the F blocks and low suspension mounts were great!

With this set-up Florian's improvements compared to the class TQ and winner were also interesting:

  • Florian’s Qualifying time: 18 laps in 5’13”
  • FTD                                 : 19 laps in 5’04”

And in the race:

  • Florian’s race result         : 18 laps in 5’02”
  • Winner                             : 19 laps in 5’03”
So a big improvement with the final set-up so we were happy with that. Next up Round 4 :)
