I have been tinkering with an idea to make a single belt conversion for one of my TRF cars. The Tamiya TA07 is really good and I really like the chassis, and the response on acceleration feels really good. I am keen to see how a single belt drive train would work in a top end chassis. So I thought I would work on a small project.

Here is the first stage. A pretty simple start, I have simply taken the TA07 motor mount and attached it to a TRF419 chassis. I just made a simple adaptor and a jig to drill one hole in the lower deck.

I also attached the std top deck but as you could imagine it would not fit in its normal position, so I had to attach a lot of spacers under the deck so it would fit.

A quick run around the local track and it was surprisingly ok. The ridiculously raised top deck makes the car a little too keen to roll. However it is very much just a very early test at this stage.

I am definitely going ahead with the conversion, so here are the next couple of stages

  1. Revised top deck (This is already drawn up in Cad), just waiting for it to arrive in the post.
  2. Revised motor mount. (A custom mount, not using the TA07 set. This will work on all TRF419 variants.

Update soon

  1. I've been tinkering with a belt driven nitro hpi, converting to electric. The belt driven system is a hell of a driving set up. I just converted a nitro vintage kyosho to electric for a friend and it seems to work better than when it was nitro. Now the hpi will be my next project.

  2. Looks like you could get the motor closer to the center line if you flip the spur and pulley around so that the belt runs right next to the motor plate. The spur would be next to the battery. Cool build, can't wait to see more of it.
